What did YOU do in the Great War Daddy?

With this cartoon in the May, 1917 issue of The Yachting Monthly, Arthur Briscoe started a series of "What did You do?" illustrations showing the lighter side of life in the R.N.V.R. and, more specifically, aboard an M.L. As the YM editor noted with this first cartoon:

"Realizing that this question will be asked by innumerale children, and that our innate national modesty will prevent retired veterans from giving a true account of their deeds, we hope that this series, suitably framed, will answer importunate infants without wounding the delicate susceptibilities of a hero. And although the artist is modesty itself, he hopes that these pictures may be the means of inspiring future generations to deeds of un-heard-of heroism. -Ed."
