As part of an official Admiralty commission to paint and illustrate Royal Navy activities in Mesopotamia Donald Maxwell spent a year in the Mediterranean and Palestine, going as far east as Baghdad - just as the war ended. He collected this work in a number of books. This illustration is taken from "The Last Crusade".
